These are half day (1pm-5pm) sessions with no lunch provided. All sessions are to be held at Elton Primary School.

Session 1 – Monday 9th October

Session 2 – Wednesday 17th January

Session 3 – Tuesday 1st May

Session 4 – Wednesday 4th July

Course Outline

Session 1:

Subject leaders will be led through the mastery approach to planning prior to teachers attending the individual year group courses. Writing will be the focus of the first session. Subject leaders will be provided with an action plan for the mastery approach to writing. This can be discusssed and added to the school action plan.

Course Outcomes

A clear understanding of mastery in English. A consistent approach to planning for mastery in writing in your school. Completed action plan for English writing for 2017-18

Session 2:

Prior to session 2 of the mastery year group courses, subject leaders will be led through year group expectations for reading and discuss effective strategies to enhance the teaching of reading throughout the school. Whole class shared reading will be exemplified. Subject leaders will be provided with an action plan for the mastery approach to reading. This can be discussed and added to school action plan.

Session 3:

Subject Leaders will consider progression in spelling skills from reception to Y6. Effective teaching approaches and ideas will be shared. There will be an opportunity for subject leaders to analyse books from their school in order to ensure consistent approaches to the teaching of spelling.

Session 4:

Subject leaders will evaluate the approach to the teaching of mastery in English throughout their school. A short book scrutiny will be completed to consider the progress children have made using the mastery approach. Planning for the following academic year will be part of this session for subject leaders.
